Project: Concrete Repairs of KYDOT Bridge

• Enhancement of service life of concrete repairs with Carbon FRP

Project Description:
This 8 span bridge is located within a stone’s throw of the Kentucky capital building in Frankfort, Kentucky. The DOT put out a bid to perform concrete repairs on the 7 piers, pier caps and 4 beams. Only the beam repairs were to be wrapped with CFRP. Finally, the entire bridge was to be painted with a masonry coating.
During the demolition, it was realized that the bid quantity of 650 CF would be exceeded as the concrete on the piers and caps was in very bad shape. Also the 4 beam repairs became 6 beams requiring CFRP. The final quantity of concrete repairs ended up being in excess of 2,000 CF.
The sections were restored using the shotcrete method. All rebar was sand blasted and wire mesh was added in critical areas. Access was gained using man lifts – at one time there were 8 on the site. The work started mid October but, due to the overage on the volume, the work extended well into the winter and completed end of January.
The bridge was heated in sections to allow the work to continue through the winter months.
