Structural Repair and Strengthening of 4 silo Perlite complex of S&B Industrial Minerals, Milos Island, Greece.
Project: Structural Repair and Strengthening of 4 silo Perlite complex of S&B Industrial Minerals
Location: Isle of Milos, Greece
Client: S & B Industrial Minerals S.A.
Contract Duration: 6 Months
Scope of Works:
• Structural Strengthening & Repair of Bearing rings with FRP
Project Description:
The silos were built in 1972 for storing perlite fractions and subsequently loaded to ships through a conveyor belt. The complex consists of four silos of 30 m high and 8m diameter with a storage capacity of 1.500 m3 each one.
Due to the proximity to the sea front severe problems of reinforcement corrosion and carbonation of the concrete became apparent. The initial method of repair was to apply a jacket of concrete at all silos. After a period of time it was discovered that the foundation bearing rings had cracks due to the added load of the concrete jacket.
Fibrwrap was then called in and prepared the structural design, the technical specifications of operations, took over the supervision of the project and performed the part of the project involving the structural strengthening of the foundation bearing rings with application of Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems of SCH Carbon Fibers and Tyfo Epoxies.
